The Mount Gay Round Barbados Race:

A Challenging Course with a Long-History

The Mount Gay Round Barbados Race will take place on Sunday 21st Jan 2024.

The yacht will circumnavigate the island clockwise starting with the West Coast of Barbados. If the crow flew in a circle, the Mount Gay Round Barbados Race would be about 60 miles, but yachts end up doing around 90 miles. The constant trade winds and incredible sailing conditions make it a great course.

Starting and ending at the Barbados Cruising Club, the boats will sail through the historic Carlisle Bay, pass the Bridgetown deep water harbour to starboard.

Then begins a 20-mile tight reach in calm water up the West Coast of Barbados, past the homes of the very rich and famous passing Holetown and Speightstown.

The race and viewing spots

After rounding the northern tip of the island, the boats will encounter the full force of the Atlantic at the East Coast of Barbados with nothing between their yachts and Africa.

They will then face a good 10-mile plus beat in tricky currents, wind shifts, and some big waves. Follow this with a 20-mile fetch, riding those same waves beam on, trying to maximise speed without losing height to clear Bathsheba and later East Point.

Bear away and hoist through the big breaking Atlantic rollers for a fantastic 18-mile downwind slide along the South Coast of Barbados passing Oistens, Rockley and Worthing. Dropping the kites and skate around the island's South West corner to finish back in Carlisle Bay.
